How Oil Catch Can Works?

The oil catch can is connected to the crankcase ventilation system of your car. It helps to filter out components from the oil. These components are air and other contaminants. 

Gas blow-by is being produced by every vehicle during the combustion process. It is built of contaminants and oil vapor. This forms inside the intake system of your engine. Later damages the performance of the vehicle as a whole. 

The oil catch can prevent that from happening to your vehicle. They extract and separate the oil from other dirt or air. Which was sent from the ventilation valve. Then they sent the oil back to the PVC system. Later they send both the oil and air to the intake manifold

As they are separating the air and oil,  they are also referred to as oil/air separators.

How to Route an LS Oil Catch Can?

The mixture of oil, air, and other vapor in the engine can lead to low performance. It can even cause a blast due to overheating. Installing an oil catch can ensure that this doesn’t happen.

Going to a car shop to install the catch can is time-consuming and costly. You can easily route and install your LS oil catch can on your own. It will save you a lot of money and time. 


For routing the oil catch can, you would need a few tools. These can very easily be acquired. The tools include-

  • Oil catch can (with the same number and sized holes as your engine)
  • Metal bracket
  • Different sized lock nuts
  • Longnose pliers
  • Screwdriver
  • Wrench
  • Socket
  • Hoses (5 feet long with ⅜ anterior and ⅝ exterior diameter)

Installing and Routing the Oil Catch Can

After managing all the tools, just follow these steps to install the catch can in your ls engine.

Step 1: Determining the Place for the Catch Can

There needs to be a little bit of breathing space for the catch can work properly. So, it is better to place the can near the driver-side. Rather than the opposite side of the engine. 

Step 2: Building a Metal Bracket

Measure the gap between the space with a tape measure. Then take a metal bracket of that exact measure. Next, drill holes in it accordingly at the exact point as the catch can.

You should use a metal bracket. Because you can easily detach it if you wanna use something else. Also, using it would minimize putting holes in the car.

Step 3: Setting Up the Oil Catch Can Kit for Installing

Now, take some plumbers tape and a wrench. Put some plumbers tape on your hose connector. Then install two of them into the catch can to get an air-tight seal. 

Step 4: Connecting the Metal Bracket to the Catch Can

First, remove the mounting bracket of the catch can. Then attach that with the metal bracket. Use lock nuts to attach them tightly. After that, install the bracket on that catch can.

Step 5: Attaching the Catch Can Against the Wall

Place a nut to create a little bit of space before placing the catch can on the wall. After that, tighten the nuts with a wrench. 

Step 6: Connecting the Hoses to the Oil Catch Can

Cut a five feet hose nearly in half into two pieces now. The left hose connector is the ‘in’ and the right hose connector is the ‘out’ of your catch can. The ‘in’ will be coming from the PVC valve. And the ‘out’ will be going back to the air intake. 

Place a hose clamp on the hoses and insert it in both the hose connectors. After that, tighten the clamp to lock those to the catch can.

Step 7: Replacing the Old Hoses with New Ones

Take the ‘out’ hose and wrap it behind the motor. It will replace the hose that goes into the intake near the back of the engine bay. Use a hose clamp to tighten it.

The PVC valve is at the back of the left cylinder bank. You have to replace the PVC valve hose with the ‘in’ hose of your catch can. 

Pick up the smallest pliers that fit on the clamp. Use it to pull the clamp off. Then the hose should be able to come off very easily. Put a hose clamp on the hose that goes into the inlet of your catch can. After that, plug it in.

That’s All! By doing all these you can very easily route the catch can on your own. 

Things to Consider After Routing an Oil Catch Can

You have to consider a few things after routing. These will make the routing better and long-lasting. These include-

  • Use a zip tie to lock all the hoses. So, it doesn’t move from their place. 
  • Check if there’s any leak in the hoses. Do this by turning on the motor. If you hear any hissing sound, check all the connections again.
